Speaking Up for Success

Speaking Up for Success

Reaching our career and personal goals often depends on our ability to speak up: to have difficult conversations, to negotiate a promotion, a salary increase, or a business deal. This can be a struggle, even for highly accomplished professionals. These micro-learning units are a quick and easy way to learn tools and skills that can help you today.

These micro-learning units are created by Triad, a global leadership consulting group founded by members of the Harvard Negotiation Project, the pioneering negotiation think tank at Harvard Law School. Each unit takes about 10 minutes or less to complete.

1. How to Make Difficult Conversations More Productive
Have more productive conversations with peers, supervisors, and those you manage.

What You'll Learn

  • The most effective way to prepare and to avoid common pitfalls so you can increase the likelihood of a good outcome.
  • Use curiosity to turn stalemate into learning conversations, even when neither party wants to listen to the other.
  • Engage not just with what the other person says, but also with what they are really thinking and feeling.

2. How to Understand Challenging Emotions in Conversations
Learn about emotions, what causes them, and how to navigate other people's and your own.

What You'll Learn

  • How to handle the strong feelings–yours and theirs–so they don't derail the conversation.

3. How to Help Others Take Accountability
Help others see their contribution and become part of the solution.

What You'll Learn

  • Move away from blame to think about joint contribution in a systematic way, so you can get to problem-solving more quickly and effectively.

4. How to Give Performance Reviews
Give effective feedback to those you manage and skillfully discuss compensation.

What You'll Learn

  • How to prepare for performance conversations and make the most out of the time you have with each member of the team.
